Pet Urine and Wool Area Rugs – We Can Clean That!

Oh, how we love our pets and occasionally they’ll have accidents on our beautiful wool or silk area rugs.

With area rugs, permanently removing the odor source means you are going to have to wash it out.

You cannot “surface clean” an oriental rug by calling your local carpet cleaning company with a truck mount and have them remove the odor causing elements by “surface cleaning” the face of the rug.

It just doesn’t work that way.

Oriental style area rugs, especially those made of wool and silk are tightly woven pieces of art, and your local carpet cleaner just can’t remove pet accidents and the associated bacteria.

Many carpet cleaners will try to cover up urine odor by using heavy fragrance deodorizers which simply just make the matter worse. It’s like spraying Fabreze in a Port-a-Potty floral smelling sewage ain’t gonna cut it.

The most thorough way to get to the odor-causing contaminants of woven rugs is a thoroughly exhaustive submersion HAND WASH by an experienced rug washing company.

Why rugs are not cleaned in the home

To reemphasize, the recommended cleaning method for Oriental, wool and silk area rugs is HAND WASHING them.

For as long as rugs have been woven, they have also been washed.  Hundreds of years ago, and

Hundreds of years ago, and in fact, currently, in the poorer provinces of Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, etc, they still wash area rugs by hand, at the closest river.  No carpet cleaning wands or other mechanical equipment.

Rugs – ESPECIALLY wool rugs – have the capacity to hold a large amount of soil in them. This is because wool fibers are made up of scales offering plenty of places for dirt and contaminants to hide.

There are several reasons why cleaning wool and silk area rugs require them to be removed from the home.

To thoroughly clean wool or silk fibers they must go through a dye test, thorough dusting, and in most cases, a full submersion hand washing.

A dye test can take up to 24 hours to complete, and it is impossible to dust an area rug in a client’s home (unless of course, you don’t mind dirt, sand, dust mites and pollen blown all over).

A full submersion rug washing also can not be performed in the client’s home and most carpet cleaning companies do not own submersion pits or have industry certified technicians with the experience to clean area rugs properly.

We’ve seen carpet cleaning companies wash valuable area rugs in parking lots.

The client believes their rugs are being cared for with love by experienced rug cleaning technicians when the facts are just the opposite.  In many cases, a kid on commission who can’t  identify a Tabriz from a Ghom hand knotted rug is slinging a carpet cleaning wand against a valuable, treasured Oriental rug.
