How To Clean and Vacuum An Oriental Rug Without Causing Damage

At Oriental Rug Salon we’re often asked by clients for tips on how to keep wool area rugs looking they’re very best.

As SW Florida’s leading cleaning and restoration company for hand-knotted, tufted and machine-made area rugs, we’d like to offer the following information on how you can assure that your cherished rug will last for generations to come.

Sweep You Area Rug

To properly clean your area rug, we recommend sweeping the pile with a natural bristle broom or you could also hire commercial cleaning brisbane to avoid the hassle.  This sweeping action provides the benefit of agitation and is safe to use on rugs with fringe.  A broom with straw bristles is fine and sweep from one end to another. Don’t move your broom back and forth or you may end up damaging the rug.  You can also use a soft bristle brush and visit our video here for more information.

NEVER USE A VACUUM CLEANER WITH A BEATER BRUSH ENGAGED.  THE ROTARY ACTION IS TOO AGGRESSIVE AND CAN FRAY OUT THE WRAPPED SELVEDGE EDGES, DESTROY FRINGE, AND PULL-OUT HAND-WOVEN KNOTS.

Sweeping your area rug from one end to the other helps loosen dust mites, insects, pet hair and dander as well as dry soils and other contaminates.  If you still want to vacuum, make sure your vacuum cleaners beater brush is turned off and stay away from the rug’s fringe.

When vacuuming, start in the middle of the rug and vacuum toward the edges, STAY AWAY FROM THE FRINGE.

Spills

If you experience a spill, dealing with it immediately can often prevent permanent staining.

Use a moist, clean white cloth or paper towel to blot from the outer edges toward the center of the spill.

Once blotting is complete, if the spot remains, you can add 2-3 drops of hair shampoo to a quart of water (you can also use a mild, unscented colorless clothes detergent or Ivory Soap).  The protein in wool is similar to human hair, so shampoo you use to wash your hair should be safe for wool.  Also, add two teaspoons of plain WHITE vinegar (NOT apple cider).

Rinse lightly with this solution

Do not scrub, as this will embed the stain more deeply into the pile of the rug and can cause fiber distortion.

Once the spot is treated and blotted, if you are happy with the result, direct a fan to the freshly cleaned area to allow for quick air drying. Do not let your area rug to sit damp for an extended period, as this can cause dye migration or rot the cotton foundation.
