Karastan Rug Production
Many Karastan wool area rugs are made of high-quality worsted wools of New Zealand. There are two types of Karastan wool rugs:
Woven – These types of wool rugs are designed to resemble woven Oriental rugs with the yarn pattern appearing both on the front and the back of the rug. Woven Karastan rugs are made on an automated mechanical loom.
Tufted –Tufted types of wool rugs have a backing material glued over the back of the rug – therefore the pattern of the rug is only visible from the top.
Tufted Karastan rugs are made by first transferring the rug pattern on a “cartoon”. The “cartoon” resembles a large paint-by-numbers sheet with individual yarn colors and the placement of these yarns integrated within the printed pattern.
Next, the pattern is hung on a large loom. Workers then punch dyed yarns, corresponding to the pattern, into the cartoon foundation, apply latex on the backing, and then glue on a “scrim” (secondary backing) when the pattern is filled in. Lastly, the top yarns are sheared to the desired height and pattern.
Tufted Karastan area rugs are less expensive than their woven counterparts however they are of high quality and will last for decades with the appropriate maintenance and cleaning.
