Pet Urine and Oriental Rugs – A Bad Combination

Removing urine stains, odor, and bacteria from your Oriental or Persian area rug can be problematic for a variety of reasons.

Irrespective of whether the stains are animal or human in origin, urine residue is made of three main elements. The sticky substance left behind is known as urea, the stain you see is the urochrome component, and the third element is uric acid, which forms as a combination of crystals, salts, and bacteria.

At the first sign of a urine accident, many rug owners will either go online and look for a “home remedy” or grab the closest spotting agent in an attempt to treat the urine issue.

With over the counter spotting agents or internet-based “solutions,” these rarely work, and in fact, can make matters worse, because these self-help remedies never address the three elements necessary for complete removal of the problem.

Some self-help products neutralize the odor but leave the bacteria, salts, or urochrome.  Others mask the odor, somewhat deal with the stain, and leave the lipids, bacteria, or other components behind to continue to damage the wool or silk fibers.  If all three elements aren’t dealt with at the same time, color migration, dry rot, or continued odor is assured.

At Oriental Rug Salon, our hands-on approach to Oriental and Persian rug cleaning is designed to leave no precious fiber of an area rug untreated.  Our proprietary blend of surfactants, emulsifiers, and gentle cleansing agents are designed to flush urine salts, bacteria, and other contaminants away from the area rug.  Once the rug is treated and cleaned, we introduce a cold, pH balanced rinse to ensure no residues are left behind and that every precious warp and weft is conditioned.  The area rug is then laid flat on an air table where it is monitored until completely dry.

The final step of our cleaning process involves a thorough final inspection with Xenon lighting, grooming of the nap, and preparation for delivery to the client.

Oriental Rug Salon is a Certified partner with the prestigious Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) and the International Carpet & Rug Institute (CRI).  In addition, we are A+ Rated with the Better Business Bureau and a six-year-in-a-row-winner of the coveted Angie’s List Super Service Award.
