What Do The Designs On A Persian Area Rug Mean?

Have you ever wondered what the motifs (designs) on your Persian area rug convey?

Each hand-woven area rug has a story to tell and if you can interpret the symbols woven into your rug, you’ll have a better understanding of your work of art.

This week let’s examine what “Protective” motifs look like.

Stars, Crosses, Dragons and Other Protective Symbols

Protective motifs have a special place in tribal rugs. They were used on kilims especially to protect marriages, spouses, family members, children, houses and grain, animals and other possessions against the evil eye, ill-will, natural catastrophes, and dangerous animals.

Many of these motifs share some fundamental features, such as the overall diamond shape and the hooked or crenelated perimeter, such that they tend to blend together and become almost indistinguishable. They include stars and crosses, stylized dragons and scorpions, evil-eye amulets, hooks, eight-pointed stars, Leshgi stars, and burdock burrs.
