What Is A Hand-Tufted Oriental Area Rug?

A Hand-Tufted Area Rug

The process for creating a hand-tufted rug is drastically different than hand weaving an Oriental, Persian or Turkish area rug.

Hand-Tufted area rugs are made by punching strands of wool into a canvas or “cartoon” that is stretched on a frame with the help of a hand-operated tool. This process is not very time-intensive and does not require the same level of skill that hand-knotting does.

After piling with wool, the rug is removed from the frame, and glue is applied to the back of the rug to keep the wool pile in place.  A scrim fabric is then applied to hide the glue backing. To complete the rug, a fringe is added by either sewing or gluing it on.

Difference in Cost

A hand-tufted rug costs less than a hand-knotted one because they usually take less time and skill to make and are less costly to produce. In addition, tufted area rug may have dozens or even hundreds of the same design made for the commercial or tourist trade.

Hand-knotted area rugs are singular and made one at a time and can take months or even years to complete.

Life Span Differences

A hand-knotted rug will outlast a hand-tufted one. Hand-knotted area rugs can become a family heirloom and last for generations if properly maintained. A hand-tufted rug will not last as long in the same level of condition.

The Question of Value

Value is determined not by how little or how much a rug costs. A good-quality hand-knotted rug can become a collector’s item, but this doesn’t hold true for just any hand-knotted rug.

Our appraiser has valued hand-knotted area rugs for thousands of dollars less than what an individual may have paid for them either because the rug was overpriced when purchased, or the quality was poor, which also led to paying too much.

There is a whole range of hand-knotted rugs, from poorly made examples to exquisite ones. Hand-knotted rugs also have superior value because they are original, not mass-produced. Hand-tufted rugs never quite achieve heirloom status because they are not one of a kind.

Tufted area rugs are affordable and can be beautiful to look at and can make an appealing and interesting addition to your home decor.
