How To Remove Spots and Urine From Oriental, Wool and Silk Area Rugs

Treating Spots on Wool, Silk, and Oriental Style Rugs

Whether it is wine, coffee, Kool-Aid, urine, or food spills, the first step to protect your wool, silk or natural fiber area rug from permanent staining is to remove as much of the spill as possible – as soon as possible. Paper towels or white washcloth work well.  Remember to BLOT – do not scrub.

After blotting, many spills will require diluting.  If after blotting, if there is still evidence of a spot, you should dilute the area with a mixture of 50% WHITE vinegar, 50% cold water and a few drops of liquid dish detergent. Apply mixture and massage with your fingertip or spoon.  Don’t get the rug sopping wet unless you need to.

Allow this mixture to stay on the rug for approximately 5 minutes and blot until most of the moisture is removed.  The next step is to pour fresh clean water on the area and blot again to remove any remaining signs of dish detergent.  Blot again and if you have a fan, turn it on and direct to the area rug and allow to dry.

Please note that some rugs have unstable dyes that may run if you put water on them. Be sure to pre-test the rug by dipping a white cloth or paper towel in the 50/50 mixture and place on the back of the rug (apply a little pressure by adding a milk jug, can of food, etc. on the towel) and allow to sit for about ten minutes.  If the cloth has no dye transfer, you should be safe to apply your mixture.

If you are not successful in your spotting attempt, please consider contacting Oriental Rug Salon and we’ll do our best to restore the beauty of your area rug, minus the ugly spot.

NEVER use a store purchased spot remover on natural fiber rugs that are formulated for use on wall to wall carpeting. They will harm the pile of your rug and can set the stain permanently.

Water Intrusion

If your area rug has been involved in a water intrusion, you shouldn’t panic. You’ll need to extract as much water as possible with a shop-vac and promote drying with a fan.  Once you’ve completed this process, contact Oriental Rug Salon as soon as possible, and our professionals will pick up your area rug and provide the appropriate services to clean and

Urine

Urine stains from pets and humans are probably the most common of all stains in Oriental rugs. They present a special problem because urine actually changes the chemical composition of dyes once it has a chance to set.

The best strategy to remove urine is the same way as other stains – blot as much of the liquid as possible and then treat with a mixture of WHITE Vinegar and water (no detergent this time).  Allow mixture to remain for approximately ten minutes and then blot.  You do not need to rinse.

If a urine stain is already dry when you discover it, contact Oriental Rug Salon, and we’ll pick up your rug and completely submerge in enzymes and the appropriate cleaning solutions.  Your rug will be returned fresh and clean.
